DMOZ:   The Open Directory Project.  DMOZ is a directory not a search engine.  It is constructed and maintained by a global community of volunteer editors.

AllTheWeb:  AllTheWeb index is provided by Yahoo!  AllTheWeb search includes news, image, audio and video files and can be searched in 36 languages.

AltaVista:  AltaVista is a business of Overture Services, Inc.  Overture is a wholly owned subsidiary of Yahoo!

AOL:  America Online, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Time Warner Inc.  AOL search includes music, news, sports and entertainment.

Ask Jeeves:  Ask Jeeves is driven by the Teoma search engine.  Teoma analyzes the web as it naturally occurs in subject-specific communities to determine which sites are most relevant.

Google:  Google is a search engine.  It is the biggest and most used of the search engines.  Google searches about 8,058,044,651 web pages at any given time.

HotBot:  HotBot's results come from the Direct Hit service, from the Inktomi search engine and its directory information from the Open Directory project (DMOZ).

Mamma:  Mamma, "The mother of all search engines," is a "smart" metasearch engine. Mamma searches a variety of sources, compiles their results, eliminates duplicates and presents them according to relevance.

MSN Search:  MSN Search service, by Microsoft, is a LookSmart-powered directory of web sites, with results from Inktomi and some from Direct Hit.

Yahoo!:  Yahoo is the oldest major web site directory and the largest human compiled guide to the web. Yahoo supplements its results with Google's.
